Presenting

A presentation is a fantastic opportunity to influence people…

Whatever the medium, a presentation allows you to put your ideas in front of others, so it pays to do it well.

Those that know this often come looking to gain that extra edge, to go from good to great.

Others simply want to become proficient. For them, the biggest obstacle is often nerves. This is something actors know all about, so we use the techniques of the professionals to harness the energy that nerves bring, rather than letting them run the show.

The virtual presentation

The additional challenges of presenting via a webcam create traps for the unwary and opportunities for those who can master the medium.

“Bill is incredible. His approach is so personal and effective in short periods of time. He spent two days with our group and the results are incredibly tangible, immediate, and lasting. He teaches more than presenting. He helps people understand how and when they’re at their best and how to build on that while minimizing elements that detract from effectiveness. Our group’s only disappointment was that we waited so long to find Bill and have him work with our group.”

Content

Many presenters struggle to fully identify the core of what they want to communicate.

What do you want your audience to do as a result of hearing you speak? What is the action you want them to take? And how do you want them to feel? After all, emotion influences people’s behaviour far more effectively than logic. (Ever known you should do something - perhaps ring someone you find scary - and found endless reasons to put it off?)

I use a simple, but rigorous process to help you get to a clear central message and identify how you want the audience to feel. Once you have this, communicating it persuasively becomes much easier.

…delivery…

There’s no right way of giving a presentation. But there are techniques that enhance your credibility and help your message land and stick. Many of the same skills apply both in-the-room and virtually, but there are also specific adjustments needed to make the most of online presentations.

I carefully tailor the content of each group workshop or coaching session to the specific needs of the individual(s), reinforcing their existing strengths and identifying small changes that will have a big impact.

…and rehearsal

We then practise these new techniques in a supportive, no-risk process of rehearsal and feedback. This is where my experience directing top actors really comes into its own.

Storytelling

9 of the 10 most watched TEDTalks contain stories and they are a fantastic way of really making your communication impactful and memorable.

Think Steve Jobs was naturally, effortlessly great at presenting? While he may have had a natural aptitude, he turned his Apple presentations into world-class events by doing the same thing as any other performer: lots of rehearsal and feedback.

“Every leader should have the opportunity to work with such a fantastic and committed coach as Bill…. Bill really understood and respected my personal style and guided me to improve it by proposing the right and challenging questions and offering a range of resources for me to decide, rather than to come up with conventional solutions. I truly enjoy working with you, Bill! Thank you!”
